Jacob deGrom was born on June 19, 1988, in DeLand, Florida. His baseball career began at Calvary Christian Academy in Ormond Beach, Florida, where he played shortstop and pitched. Despite being lightly recruited, he eventually walked on to play baseball at Stetson University, where he transitioned fully to pitching. deGrom was drafted by the New York Mets in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB draft, and made his MLB debut on May 15, 2014.
