Jay Hook was a professional baseball player who played for the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets from 1957 to 1964. He was born on November 18, 1936, in Waukegan, Illinois. He graduated from Niles High School in Niles, Michigan, and went on to play college baseball at Northwestern University. In his rookie season with the Cincinnati Reds in 1957, Jay Hook had a 7-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in 16 starts. He helped the Reds capture the National League pennant that year. Hook's best season in the majors came in 1962, where he had a 14-7 record with a 3.22 ERA in 32 starts for the New York Mets. He had 174 strikeouts that year and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Hook pitched for the Mets for three seasons and was traded to the Milwaukee Braves in 1965, but he never played in the major leagues again.
