Jay Hook was a professional baseball player who played for the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets from 1957 to 1964. He was born on November 18, 1936, in Waukegan, Illinois. He graduated from Niles High School in Niles, Michigan, and went on to play college baseball at Northwestern University. In his rookie season with the Cincinnati Reds in 1957, Jay Hook had a 7-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in 16 starts. He helped the Reds capture the National League pennant that year. Hook's best season in the majors came in 1962, where he had a 14-7 record with a 3.22 ERA in 32 starts for the New York Mets. He had 174 strikeouts that year and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Hook pitched for the Mets for three seasons and was traded to the Milwaukee Braves in 1965, but he never played in the major leagues again. In his career, he had a 51-57 record with a 3.89 ERA in 155 starts.

After retiring from baseball, Jay Hook worked as a high school guidance counselor in New York. He also served as the pitching coach for the New York Yankees' minor league team in Oneonta, New York. Hook was inducted into the Niles High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996, and the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013. He passed away on January 22, 2022, at the age of 85. Jay Hook will always be remembered as a talented pitcher who helped lead the Cincinnati Reds to the World Series in 1961 and had one of the best seasons in New York Mets history.
