Howell started his professional career in 1976 after being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 28th round out of the University of Miami. He made his major league debut with the Yankees in 1980, but it wasn't until he joined the Dodgers in 1988 that he really made a name for himself. In his first season with the Dodgers, he recorded 21 saves and helped lead the team to the World Series, where they fell to the Athletics.

Despite his success on the field, Howell was involved in controversy during the 1988 playoffs when he was caught using pine tar on his glove, which is against MLB rules. He was suspended for three games of the World Series but still played a crucial role in helping the Dodgers reach the championship round. Howell retired in 1994 with a 58-53 record and a 3.34 ERA, but his legacy as a top-notch closer still lives on. Read even more about Jay Howell at Wikipedia
