In 1994, Payton was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round, 29th overall pick. He made his major league debut on May 26, 1998, and went on to play for several other teams, including the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox. Throughout his career, Payton was known for his excellent defense in the outfield, as well as his steady hitting and base running abilities.

Throughout his 12-year career in the major leagues, Payton played in 1,259 games, hit 118 home runs, and had a batting average of .279. He also won a World Series championship in 2001 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. After retiring from baseball in 2010, Payton became involved in coaching and currently serves as the head coach for the Concordia Lutheran High School baseball team in Tomball, Texas.
