Hairston was known for his versatility throughout his career, where he played several positions, including second base, shortstop, third base, and outfield. In 2006, he signed with the Texas Rangers and played there for a few seasons until he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds, where he had a remarkable year in 2009, hitting a career-high batting average of .326 in 80 games.

In 2011, Hairston signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, helping them reach the National League Championship Series (NLCS) that season. He later signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played for two seasons, and finally ended his career in 2013 with the Washington Nationals. Hairston retired from baseball with a .257 career batting average, 70 home runs, and 420 runs batted in (RBIs) in 1299 games played.
