He attended Smithfield-Selma High School, where he excelled in baseball and earned All-State honors. Sands was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2008 MLB draft. He quickly made a name for himself in the minor leagues, earning several accolades, including the 2010 Southern League MVP and the 2011 Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year. Sands made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 2011, and he went on to play for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants. Throughout his career, Sands was known for his impressive power and his ability to hit home runs.

Although Sands spent much of his career in the minor leagues, he was a standout player and a fan favorite.
