Abbott attended the University of Michigan, where he played baseball and led the Wolverines to their first Big Ten Championship in 11 years. He was drafted by the California Angels in the first round of the 1988 draft and made his debut for the team the following year. He played for 10 seasons in the major leagues, also pitching for the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers.

Abbott's most significant achievement came in 1993 when he pitched a no-hitter while playing for the Yankees against the Cleveland Indians. He retired from the game in 1999 with a career record of 87-108 and an ERA of 4.25. Despite his disability, Abbott became a role model for disabled people around the world and an inspiration to all who faced adversity.
