Edmonds started his baseball career in 1988 and was drafted by the California Angels in the seventh round of the 1988 MLB Draft. After spending several years in their minor league system, he made his debut on September 9, 1993. Throughout his career, he played with teams like the Anaheim Angels, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Cincinnati Reds. He was a four-time All-Star and earned eight Gold Glove Awards for his exceptional defense. He also won a World Series Championship with the Cardinals in 2006, where he hit for a .471 average, with a home run and six runs batted in during the series.

After retiring from baseball, Edmonds became a television analyst for Fox Sports Midwest. He was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014, and his number, 15, was retired by the team in 2018. Despite his retirement, his contributions to baseball will always be remembered, especially his ability to track down fly balls as he made one of the most memorable catches in baseball history, diving backwards to snag a ball from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004.
