Jim Fairey

Jim Fairey was an American baseball player born on November 14, 1923, in Greenville, South Carolina. He began his professional baseball career in 1944 with the Anderson Electrics in the Class-D league. Fairey's next team was the St. Louis Browns, with whom he signed in 1946. He made his major league debut with the Browns in 1947 and played for them for three seasons. His best year came in 1948 when he batted .292 with four home runs and 38 RBI in 111 games. Fairey also played with the Detroit Tigers in 1950 and the Cleveland Indians in 1953 before retiring in 1955. Overall, he played for five seasons in the major leagues, appearing in 324 games and hitting .253 with six home runs and 98 RBI. More about Jim Fairey

After his playing days, Fairey coached in the minor leagues, managing the Lynchburg White Sox from 1958 to 1959 and the Charlotte Hornets from 1960 to 1966. In 1961, he led the Hornets to the South Atlantic League championship. Fairey made a brief return to the majors as a coach for the Houston Colt .45s (later renamed the Astros) in 1968. He then worked in the Astros' minor league system for several years before retiring from baseball.

Jim Fairey will always be remembered for his tenacity as a baseball player. Despite his relatively short career, he made a notable impact as a versatile infielder and outfielder, particularly with the St. Louis Browns. Fairey was a hard worker and a team player, earning the respect of his coaches and fellow players.
