He played as a catcher in Major League Baseball for nine seasons, from 1965 to 1973, with three different teams: the Chicago White Sox, the Texas Rangers, and the Milwaukee Brewers. French was best known for his exceptional defensive skills behind the plate. He was an outstanding pitch-caller, and his strong arm and quick release made it difficult for opposing players to steal bases. French was a fan favorite for his hard-nosed style of play and his leadership in the clubhouse. He was highly respected by his teammates and coaches alike and was considered a mentor to many young players.

After his playing career, French remained in baseball as a coach and scout for several teams, including the Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers. In 2013, he was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the sport in his home state. Jim French will always be remembered as a tenacious player and a beloved figure in the baseball community.
