He played as a pitcher for the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies from 1947 to 1959. Hearn is known for his outstanding performance with the New York Giants, where he played from 1947-1953, helping them win two National League Pennants and one World Series championship in 1954. Hearn had an impressive record during his baseball career. He won 109 games and had a 3.64 earned run average with 682 strikeouts in 1,743 innings pitched. He is also known for throwing three shutouts in twelve starts during the 1951 season, leading the Giants to their first National League Pennant since 1937. However, Hearn suffered an arm injury in 1954, but he returned to play for the Phillies and Cardinals later in his career.

Jim Hearn's successful career in baseball was recognized in 1970 when he was inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame. His contribution to the New York Giants during the team's golden era will always be remembered as he was a significant part of their World Series win in 1954.
