Jim Kern Autographs
Jim Kern was a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for eight different teams over the course of his career. Born in Gladwin, Michigan in 1949, Kern played high school baseball and was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1967. After working his way up through the minor leagues, Kern made his MLB debut in 1974 with the Indians, where he played for two seasons before being traded to the Texas Rangers. Kern enjoyed his best seasons with the Rangers, particularly in 1979 when he recorded 29 saves and earned a spot on the American League All-Star team.
Despite dealing with arm injuries throughout his career, Kern continued to be a sought-after relief pitcher throughout his time in the majors. He also had stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and more before retiring in 1986. During his career, Kern recorded a total of 88 saves and a 3.32 earned run average. He was also known for his competitive spirit on the mound, often pumping his fist and shouting after recording a strikeout or a key out in a game.
In 1979, he won the Rolaids Relief Man Award, which recognizes the top relief pitcher in each league based on statistics and a vote by fans. Following his retirement, Kern worked as a pitching coach for several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.
