Jim O'Toole was born on January 10, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois. He began his career in baseball in 1955, when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent. O'Toole made his major league debut in 1958 and quickly established himself as a top pitcher for the Reds. O'Toole played in two World Series with the Reds in 1961 and 1962. In the 1961 series, he started two games and pitched 15 innings, striking out 10 batters and walking three.
