Jim Presley was born on October 23, 1961, in Pensacola, Florida. He went to Tate High School, where he was known for his athletic ability. He was an All-State football player and a star in baseball. After graduation, Presley was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 1980 amateur draft. Presley played in the major leagues for nine seasons, including stints with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, and Baltimore Orioles. He was known for his power-hitting ability and played mainly as a third baseman. In 1986, Presley hit 27 home runs and 107 RBIs, which was a career-high. He was also a solid fielder and had a career .954 fielding percentage. Presley finished his career with a .247 batting average, 98 home runs, and 352 RBIs.

After his playing career ended, Presley worked as a coach for several teams, including the Florida Marlins and the Milwaukee Brewers. He also continued to work with young baseball players, offering lessons and clinics in his hometown of Pensacola. Jim Presley was inducted into the Pensacola Sports Hall of Fame in 2009, recognizing his impact in baseball in the local community and his successful career in the major leagues.
