Jimmie Deshong Autograph

Jimmie DeShong was an American right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1930 to 1943. He was born on August 18, 1909, in Midland, Maryland, and attended Beall High School. He began his professional career in 1928, playing for the Cumberland Colts of the Class D Blue Ridge League, and then moved up to the Class B Three-I League for the next two seasons. DeShong made his major league debut with the Washington Senators in 1930 as a reliever, and later became a regular starter for the team. He had a strong 1933 season, finishing with a record of 16-12 and a 3.81 ERA. In 1935, he was traded to the St. Louis Browns, where he spent the rest of his career. He had his best season in 1937, posting a record of 14-10 with a 3.28 ERA and earning a selection to the All-Star Game. He continued to pitch for the Browns until 1943, but his numbers declined in his final years before retiring at the age of 33.

Overall, Jimmie DeShong had a successful baseball career, finishing with a record of 77-76, a 4.30 ERA, and 613 strikeouts in 1349.1 innings pitched. He was known for his curveball and his durability, having pitched over 200 innings in six different seasons. After his playing career, DeShong worked as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals and as a coach for the University of Maryland baseball team. He passed away on February 9, 1979, at the age of 69.
