Jimmy Dykes was an American professional baseball player and manager born on November 10, 1896, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played professional baseball for 21 seasons, primarily as an infielder, from 1918 to 1939. Dykes' best years were with the Philadelphia Athletics, where he played from 1918 to 1933. Dykes' playing career spanned over two decades, during which he established himself as one of the best infielders in baseball history. He had a career batting average of .280 with 2,256 hits, 1,012 runs batted in (RBI), 108 home runs, and 104 stolen bases. He was an excellent defensive player, winning the American League's best fielding percentage award six times. In 1937, Dykes was selected to play in the All-Star Game as a representative of the Chicago White Sox, where he ended his playing career two years later in 1939 as a player-manager.

After retiring as a player, Jimmy Dykes became a full-time manager, where he began his career with the White Sox, which lasted ten years. During his time as a manager, Dykes served as the manager of the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Athletics, and Detroit Tigers. He led the Athletics to three consecutive second-place finishes from 1950 to 1952, and his best run as a manager was from 1949 to 1953 with the Athletics, posting a 373-303 record.
