Reed made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1987. He quickly established himself as a reliable infielder, playing mostly at second base. In his seven seasons with the Red Sox, Reed made two All-Star appearances, won a Gold Glove Award, and was known for his excellent defensive skills. After playing for the Red Sox, Reed played for several other teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the San Diego Padres, before retiring in 1997.

Overall, Jody Reed had a successful baseball career. He retired with a .270 batting average, 27 home runs, and 319 runs batted in. Reed was also known for his excellent defense, having a career fielding percentage of .984. After retiring from baseball, Reed went on to become a minor league coach and manager, including serving as the manager of the Greenville Drive, a Red Sox minor league affiliate.
