Joe Astroth Autographs
Joe Astroth was an American professional baseball player who played in the Major League Baseball (MLB) as a catcher. Born on September 1, 1922, in East Alton, Illinois, Astroth played for the University of Illinois before signing with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1945. He spent his first few seasons in the minor league before making it to the Athletics' main team in 1948.
Astroth played for the Athletics from 1948 to 1955, where he was known for his strong throwing arm and defensive skills behind the plate. He was the starting catcher for the Athletics during their three-game tie-breaker playoff against the Cleveland Indians in 1948, which the Athletics won. In 1957, he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics before being traded again to the Cincinnati Reds during the mid-season. He played with the Reds for one season before retiring in 1961.
Throughout his baseball career, Astroth played in 1,002 games and batted .241, with 36 home runs and 317 RBI. While his offensive stats were modest, he was highly regarded for his defensive skills as a catcher, and he was known as a mentor to young players on his teams. After retiring from baseball, Astroth went on to become a baseball scout for the Houston Astros and later served as a coach, manager, and administrator in various minor league teams. He passed away on May 3, 2012, at the age of 89.
