Joe Azcue Autographs
Joe Azcue was a Cuban-American baseball player, born on August 18, 1939, in Cienfuegos, Cuba. He spent 12 seasons in Major League Baseball, playing mainly as a catcher for the Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, and California Angels. Azcue’s professional baseball career began in 1958 when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds. He played in his first game in 1960, hitting .261 with five home runs and thirty-one runs batted in.
In 1962, Azcue played a crucial role in helping the Cincinnati Reds win the National League pennant. He was named an All-Star that same year, and his solid defense and ability to handle pitchers made him a favorite among fans and teammates alike. In 1963, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians and played there for five seasons. In 1968, Azcue was traded to the Boston Red Sox and played there for one season before being traded to the California Angels the following year. Azcue retired from baseball in 1972 with a .252 career batting average, 48 home runs, and 294 runs batted in.
Joe Azcue’s defensive skills and ability to handle pitchers were his most notable qualities. He was praised for his excellent throwing arm, quick reflexes, and ability to read hitters. Azcue was also an accomplished hitter, although he was not known for his power. His baseball career spanned over a decade, and he was well-respected by his peers and fans. After retiring from baseball, Azcue worked as an investment advisor and also coached several baseball teams. He passed away on June 10, 2020, at the age of eighty-one.
