Coleman made his major league debut with the Senators in 1965 at the age of 18. He quickly established himself as one of the team's top pitchers, and in 1969 he won 14 games and was named an American League All-Star. Coleman was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1971, and it was with the Tigers that he had the best years of his career. In 1972, he won 19 games and led the American League in strikeouts with 257. He followed that up with another strong season in 1973, winning 23 games and finishing second in the Cy Young Award voting.

After leaving the Tigers, Coleman played for several other teams, including the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Francisco Giants. He retired from baseball in 1982 with a career record of 142-135 and a 3.70 earned run average. In addition to his success on the field, Coleman was known for his intense competitiveness and his unwavering dedication to his craft. He was a beloved teammate and respected opponent, and his contributions to the game of baseball will not soon be forgotten.
