He was an American professional baseball player who played as a left-handed pitcher in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for nine seasons between 1960-1972. Joe was a standout athlete at Hickory High School, where he played not just baseball but also football and basketball. Joe Gibbon began his professional career in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1957, where he spent the next six seasons before joining the San Francisco Giants. In 1960, he made his Major League debut with the Pirates, appearing in 28 games and winning nine games with a 4.04 ERA. He was primarily used as a reliever in his first three seasons, posting solid numbers out of the bullpen.
