Gordon's career highlights include being a nine-time All-Star selection, winning the 1942 American League MVP Award, and winning five World Series championships with the Yankees. He was known for his strong arm and ability to turn double plays, becoming one of the best defensive second basemen of his time. He also had a solid batting career, averaging .268 with 253 home runs and 975 RBI's.

Despite being one of the best players of his time, Gordon's career was interrupted by WWII.
