Hauser made his debut in Major League Baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1925. He spent six seasons with the A's and played for the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns before retiring in 1938. Hauser was known for his power hitting, leading the American League in home runs twice, with 63 in 1927 and 40 in 1931. He also set a then-single season Minor League record with 69 home runs in 1930 while playing for the Baltimore Orioles.

Hauser's impressive power hitting earned him the nickname "Unser Lous" (Our Lou) in Germany, where he played baseball during the offseason in the 1930s. After retiring from baseball, Hauser worked as a salesman and later owned a tavern in Milwaukee. He died on December 16, 1997, at the age of 97, and was inducted into the Milwaukee Braves Wall of Honor in 2011. Hauser left behind an impressive baseball career and a legacy as a power hitter.
