As a catcher, Pignatano's primary focus was on defense. He was a standout defensive player, known for his quick reflexes and his ability to block pitches in the dirt. He also had a reputation for being a particularly skilled handler of pitchers, and his teammates valued his guidance and expertise behind the plate. While his offensive numbers were solid, Pignatano was not typically known as a power hitter, with a career batting average of .233.

After retiring from playing in 1963, Pignatano moved into coaching, eventually becoming the third-base coach for the New York Mets from 1968 to 1981. During his time with the Mets, Pignatano helped lead the team to their first World Series victory in 1969. He remained a beloved figure in the Mets organization, continuing to work as a coach and instructor at the team's spring training facilities well into his 80s. Pignatano passed away in 2021 at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy as a respected and influential figure in the world of baseball. Read even more about Joe Pignatano at Wikipedia
