Joey Amalfitano Autographs
Joey Amalfitano, born on January 23, 1934, is a former Major League Baseball player who spent thirteen seasons playing in the big leagues between 1954 to 1967. Amalfitano started his career as a second baseman with the New York Giants in 1954 before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1957. He played for the Cubs for five seasons before being acquired by the San Francisco Giants in 1963. He then went on to play two seasons with the Houston Astros before finishing his career with four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While Amalfitano wasn't known for his power, he had a solid career as a contact hitter and was known for his defensive prowess. He was a versatile player who could play multiple positions in the infield and outfield, earning him a reputation as a reliable utility player. Amalfitano's best season came in 1964 while playing for the Giants, where he had a career-best .278 batting average and a .349 on-base percentage. He finished his career with a .244 batting average, 170 runs batted in (RBIs), and 624 hits.
After retiring from playing, Amalfitano went on to have a successful career as a coach and manager in the Major Leagues. He served as a coach for various teams, including the Cubs, Giants, and Dodgers before getting his first managerial job with the Cubs in 1979. Amalfitano also managed the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, and Chicago White Sox during his career. In 1999, he was inducted into the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. Today, Amalfitano remains a beloved figure in the world of baseball, and his contributions to the sport are still recognized and celebrated today.
