Cora's baseball career started in 1987 when he began playing for the Padres. In 1991, he was traded to the White Sox, where he played for five seasons. During that period, he had his best season in 1997 when he batted .300 with 11 home runs, 62 runs batted in (RBI), and 55 stolen bases. In 1995, Cora helped the Mariners advance to the American League Championship Series for the first time in their franchise history.
