Jay played for the Milwaukee Braves, Cincinnati Reds, and Atlanta Braves during his career. He was one of the best pitchers in the National League during the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1961, he had a career-best season with the Reds, as he finished with a record of 21-10 and an ERA of 3.53. He also earned his only All-Star game selection that season. As a member of the Braves, Jay's best season came in 1964, where he finished with a 14-12 record and an ERA of 3.15.

Jay retired from baseball in 1966, finishing his career with a record of 99-91 and an ERA of 3.77. He was a part of two National League pennant-winning teams with the Braves in 1957 and 1958.
