Briggs started his professional career in 1963, when he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his debut in the majors in 1964, and played for a couple of seasons there until he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970. During his tenure with the team, Briggs set a record of 15 home runs and hit .240 at the plate. His consistent performance led him to be selected as an All-Star in 1973.

Briggs announced his retirement from baseball in 1975, after a decade-long career in the major leagues. He finished his career with a .236 batting average and hit 78 home runs, with 330 runs batted in. Though he got a late start to his career, Briggs is fondly remembered as one of the finest outfielders of his era. He later worked as a coach for the Montreal Expos and the Milwaukee Brewers before retiring from baseball altogether in 2007.
