John Cerutti was born on April 28, 1960, in Albany, New York, and went on to become a prominent Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, broadcaster, and coach. Cerutti was a talented high school athlete and played baseball, basketball, and football. However, he was drafted in the first round of the 1981 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, which began his professional baseball career. He played for 9 seasons for the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, and the Milwaukee Brewers from 1985 to 1995. He led the Blue Jays to a postseason berth in 1985, making 35 starts with a 3.11 ERA. Cerutti had a respectable career, with a 73-66 record, 1,046 strikeouts, and a 3.94 ERA across 1973 innings pitched. He retired from professional baseball in 1995 and went on to pursue a career in broadcasting. He worked as a color commentator for the Blue Jays, covering games for Rogers Sportsnet and TSN, before moving on to become a pitching coach for the Blue Jays in 2002. In 2003, he returned to broadcasting, joining ESPN and covering the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He continued to work as a broadcaster for the Blue Jays until his untimely death in 2004. He had a sudden heart attack in his hotel room while preparing to cover a game against the Phillies in Philadelphia on October 3, 2004, at the age of 44.
