John McDonald was born on September 24, 1974, in New London, Connecticut, and grew up in East Lyme, Connecticut. He attended East Lyme High School where he played both baseball and basketball. McDonald was a standout player in high school and went on to play college baseball at Providence College in Rhode Island. McDonald made his Major League debut with the Cleveland Indians on September 14, 1999. Over the course of his career, he played for nine different teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Boston Red Sox. McDonald was known for his exceptional defensive skills and was a utility player, playing multiple positions including shortstop, second base, third base, and outfield. Despite being primarily known for his defensive abilities, McDonald was a solid hitter and had a career batting average of .233.

McDonald retired from baseball in 2014 after playing 16 seasons in the Major Leagues. He finished his career with a .977 fielding percentage, making him one of the best defensive players of his generation. In addition to his baseball career, McDonald has also been involved in charitable work, including his own foundation, the John McDonald Charitable Foundation, which focuses on supporting children and families affected by medical issues.
