In 1964, Odom was signed by the Kansas City Athletics (now the Oakland A's) and embarked on a professional baseball career that would span nearly a decade. He made his major league debut in 1966, and quickly established himself as one of the A's most reliable starting pitchers. Odom's signature pitch was his curveball, which he used to great effect to strike out opposing batters and keep runners off base. Over the course of his career, he played for the Athletics, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox, earning praise for his competitive spirit and fierce dedication to the game.

Despite his success on the field, Odom's baseball career was not without its challenges. He struggled with injuries and struggled with addiction, causing him to miss significant time and eventually retire from the game altogether. However, Odom's contributions to baseball, both as a player and as a mentor to younger athletes, continue to be celebrated to this day. With a career that spanned almost ten years and included numerous accolades and achievements, John "Blue Moon" Odom remains one of the most memorable and beloved figures in the history of the sport.
