After graduation, Powers pursued his dream of becoming a professional baseball player. He signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1991 and played for their minor league team for four years before being called up to the major leagues in 1995. He played for the Cubs for two seasons before being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 1997. He played for the Orioles for three years before being traded again to the San Diego Padres, where he played his final season in 2001. Throughout his career, Powers was known for his strong arm, reliable defense, and powerful hitting, and he retired from professional baseball with an impressive batting average of .298.

After retiring from baseball, Powers became a coach and mentor to young players, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of athletes. He also remained active in the baseball community, participating in charity events, and helping to promote the sport to a new generation of fans.
