John Shelby was born on February 23, 1958, in Lexington, Kentucky. His interest in baseball began at a young age, and he later attended the University of Kentucky where he played as an outfielder for the Wildcats. Shelby played for the Orioles from 1981 to 1987 and was known for his speed and base stealing abilities. He had his best season in 1985 when he hit a career-high of 21 home runs and 68 RBIs with a batting average of .267. He was also named the Orioles' Most Valuable Player that year. After leaving the Orioles, Shelby played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, and Oakland Athletics before retiring in 1991 with a lifetime batting average of .239.

In addition to his playing career, Shelby went on to become a coach for several MLB teams including the Dodgers, Orioles, Seattle Mariners, and Milwaukee Brewers. He is best known for his coaching success with the Dodgers, including being a part of their 2017 National League championship team.
