John Smiley was an American professional baseball player, born on March 17, 1965, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Smiley went to Perkiomen Valley High School located in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and later attended Clemson University where he played baseball for the Clemson Tigers. Smiley made his professional baseball debut with the Pirates on July 23, 1986, and went on to play with the team for five seasons. During his time with the Pirates, Smiley won 40 games and became a two-time All-Star pitcher in 1991 and 1992. In 1993, he signed with the Minnesota Twins, and continued his solid pitching career, including his best season yet in 1995, where he finished with a career-best earned run average that earned him third place in the Cy Young Award voting.

In total, John Smiley played for 12 seasons in Major League Baseball with a career record of 126-103, an earned run average of 3.80, and 1,086 strikeouts. Smiley was forced to retire in 1997 due to a series of injuries. Despite his shortened career, he was regarded as one of the best left-handed pitchers of his generation, and his talent was recognized with two All-Star selections and a third-place finish in the Cy Young Award voting. Today, John Smiley works as a certified financial planner in his home state of Pennsylvania.
