John Wathan Autographs
John Wathan was born on October 4, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is a former professional baseball player, coach, and manager who spent his entire playing career playing for the Kansas City Royals. He started his career with the Royals in 1976 and played for nine consecutive seasons. Wathan's versatility made him an essential player for the Royals, as he was a solid catcher, an excellent first baseman, and an outfielder. During his career, he achieved a batting average of .262 with 36 home runs and 214 runs batted in.
After retiring from playing, Wathan coached in the Royals' front office before becoming the third-base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1995 to 2005. In 2006, he was named the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals under Buddy Bell's new managerial staff. From 2007 to 2008, he managed the Royals' Double-A affiliate, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, and later managed the Triple-A affiliate, the Omaha Royals, from 2009 to 2011. Wathan's career has been focused on developing young players and guiding them to success on the field.
Wathan was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, recognizing his outstanding contribution to the Royals' organization. He remains involved in baseball and is currently a special assistant in the Royals' organization, where he helps develop the team's young talent. Wathan's time as a player, coach, and manager has left a legacy in the world of baseball, demonstrating his passion and skills for the game.
