Born on June 25, 1915, in Limestone County, Texas, he started his baseball career playing for the East Texas League. Gee made his major league debut with the Pirates in 1939 at the age of 24, and by his second season, he became a top pitcher for his team. He led the National League with 10 shutouts, and his record that year was 16-11. He was an essential part of the Pirates team and helped them win the National League Pennant in 1941. He then went on to pitch for the New York Giants for five seasons before retiring in 1952. Throughout his baseball career, he played in 315 games, won 99, and recorded an ERA of 3.43.

After his baseball career, Gee worked as a minor league coach for New York and Milwaukee Braves. In 1973, he was elected to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame to honor his contributions to the sport of baseball. Johnny Gee passed away on June 23, 1986, but his legacy in baseball lives on, and he will always be remembered as one of the great pitchers who dominated the 1940s.
