Johnny Neun was an American professional baseball player and coach who spent 12 years in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on January 28, 1900, in Baltimore, Maryland, Neun's professional career began in 1917 when he was just 17 years old. He made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 1925 as a first baseman and played for the team until 1927. Neun then joined the Cincinnati Reds where he played until 1932. Throughout his career, Neun was known for his hitting prowess, consistent fielding, and exceptional leadership skills.
After retiring from his playing career in 1932, Johnny Neun went on to become a coach. He first served as the manager of the minor league team, Elmira Pioneers, in 1933. Later he served as the batting coach for the Cleveland Indians in 1937 and the New York Yankees in 1939. Neun was an effective coach and was known for his deep knowledge of the game. His team building and leadership skills were highly respected, and he was credited with the success of many of the teams he coached.
Johnny Neun's baseball career spanned over two decades, and he left a remarkable legacy in the game. He ended his career with an impressive batting average of .271, with 15 home runs and 414 runs batted in. Neun's managerial and coaching skills also earned him a spot in the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 79 on April 30, 1979, in Winter Haven, Florida.
