Johnny Oates was an American professional baseball player and manager. He was born on January 21, 1946, in Sylva, North Carolina. Oates was an exceptional catcher who played for the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New York Yankees during his 11-year career in Major League Baseball. After his playing career, Oates went on to become a successful manager in the Major Leagues. He managed the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and Montreal Expos during his managerial career. He led the Rangers to their first three playoff appearances in team history in 1996, 1998, and 1999. Oates was known for his ability to connect with his players and for his calm and steady demeanor in the dugout. He was a respected figure in the game and was loved by players and fans alike.

Oates was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2000 and passed away on December 24, 2004, at the age of 58. He was remembered as not only a great player and manager but also a great person who always put others first. He was posthumously inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2013, and his legacy lives on in the many players and coaches he inspired throughout his career.
