Johnny Podres Autographs
Johnny Podres was a former Major League Baseball pitcher who enjoyed a successful fifteen-year career in the sport. Born in Witherbee, New York in 1932, Podres enjoyed a successful high school career in baseball and basketball where he earned the nickname "Big John." After playing for minor league teams such as the Danville Leafs and the Newport News Dodgers, Podres was called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1953. In his debut season, he impressed everyone with a record of 9-4 and a 2.63 ERA. Podres was no one-hit-wonder as he continued to put in stellar performances for the Dodgers, culminating in his greatest achievement in 1955 when he led the Dodgers to the World Series title.
Podres' dominance came in the 1955 World Series when the Dodgers were playing against rivals, the New York Yankees. Podres anchored the starting rotation and went on to pitch in three out of the seven games. In Game Seven, he pitched a complete game at Yankee Stadium while only allowing two runs. The Dodgers won the game with a scoreline of 2-0, ending a decades-long championship drought for the team.
Podres was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series in recognition of his outstanding performance. The left-hander would go on to appear in five All-Star games and was inducted to the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame in 1994. Johnny Podres passed away in 2008 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy as one of the great left-handed pitchers in baseball history.
