Johnny Ray Autographs
Johnny Ray is a former second baseman who played for three Major League Baseball (MLB) teams during his career. Ray was born on March 1, 1957, in Chouteau, Oklahoma. He played college baseball at the University of Arkansas before being drafted by the Houston Astros in the fourth round of the 1979 MLB draft. Ray made his MLB debut with the Astros in 1981, playing 15 games and hitting .167.
In 1982, Johnny Ray was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent seven seasons with the Pirates, during which time he was named an All-Star in 1988. Ray's best offensive season came in 1983 when he hit .306 with 46 doubles, 6 triples, 11 home runs, and 72 runs batted in. He was also a strong defensive player, winning a Gold Glove award in 1988. Ray played his final two seasons with the California Angels, retiring in 1990 at age 33.
Throughout his career, Johnny Ray compiled a .290 batting average with 1,290 hits, 79 home runs, and 578 runs batted in. He was known for his smooth fielding, sure hands, and quick release, making him one of the top second basemen in the league during his prime. Although Ray never won a World Series or received any major awards, he left a lasting impact on the Pirates and the league as a whole.
