Johnny Schmitz was a left-handed pitcher born on November 27, 1920, in Wausau, Wisconsin. He is recognized as one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history. In high school, Schmitz played baseball, basketball, and football. He was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1941 and played a total of 13 seasons in the major leagues for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Cleveland Indians. More about Johnny Schmitz

Schmitz's baseball career was stellar. In his rookie year, he pitched 10 games and became the winning pitcher in the National League pennant game. From 1943 to 1945, Schmitz served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, and upon his return, he had one of his best seasons with the Cubs in 1946, winning 18 games. Schmitz was also a three-time All-Star and pitched in two World Series. He finished his career with 107 wins and 116 losses, a 3.71 earned run average, and 562 strikeouts.

After his professional baseball career, Schmitz continued to be involved in the game, managing in the minor leagues and working as a scout for the Minnesota Twins. In 1950, he started a car dealership in his hometown of Wausau, where gave back to his community by supporting youth sports programs. Johnny Schmitz passed away on October 31, 2011, at the age of 90.
