Johnny Schmitz was a left-handed pitcher born on November 27, 1920, in Wausau, Wisconsin. He is recognized as one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history. In high school, Schmitz played baseball, basketball, and football. Schmitz's baseball career was stellar. In his rookie year, he pitched 10 games and became the winning pitcher in the National League pennant game. From 1943 to 1945, Schmitz served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, and upon his return, he had one of his best seasons with the Cubs in 1946, winning 18 games. Schmitz was also a three-time All-Star and pitched in two World Series.
