In 2002, Jose Contreras defected from Cuba to pursue his dreams of playing in the Major Leagues. He signed with the New York Yankees in 2003, debuting on May 4 of that year. Contreras' pitching skills were highly valued by the Yankees, where he became a key part of their pitching rotation. However, his best years came when he was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2004. Contreras played an instrumental role in carrying the White Sox to the 2005 World Series Championship, where he became the first Cuban pitcher to win Game 1 in a World Series.

After spending over ten seasons playing professionally, Jose Contreras retired from baseball in 2015. He left behind an impressive mark, having pitched in nearly 300 games and earned over 70 wins. Additionally, he was a two-time World Series Champion, an Olympic Gold Medalist, and an AL Comeback Player of the Year. Today, Contreras works as a coach at the Academy of Baseball in Hialeah, Florida, where he passes on the knowledge he gained over the course of his professional career to the next generation of baseball players.
