Jose Cruz is a retired Major League Baseball outfielder who played for 19 seasons from 1970 to 1988. He was born on August 8, 1947, in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. Cruz is best known for his time with the Houston Astros, where he played for 13 seasons and earned the nickname "Cheo". Cruz began his professional career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1968, but he didn't become a regular player until he was traded to the Astros in 1975. With Houston, he became a key part of the team's success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was a consistent performer at the plate, hitting for both power and average, and was known for his speed on the basepaths. Cruz helped the Astros reach the postseason three times during his tenure with the team.

In addition to his time with the Astros, Cruz also played for the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 1988. He finished his career with a .284 batting average, 165 home runs, and 1,077 runs batted in. After retiring as a player, Cruz remained involved in baseball as a coach and instructor, helping to develop young talent in his home country of the Dominican Republic.
