Jose Cruz is a retired Major League Baseball outfielder who played for 19 seasons from 1970 to 1988. He was born on August 8, 1947, in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. Cruz is best known for his time with the Houston Astros, where he played for 13 seasons and earned the nickname "Cheo". In addition to his time with the Astros, Cruz also played for the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 1988. He finished his career with a .284 batting average, 165 home runs, and 1,077 runs batted in. After retiring as a player, Cruz remained involved in baseball as a coach and instructor, helping to develop young talent in his home country of the Dominican Republic.
