DeLeon's best years came in the mid-1980s when he was both a starter and reliever. In 1985, he set a team record by striking out 13 batters in a game against the Atlanta Braves. In 1986, he achieved 17 wins that are to this day the most by a Pirates pitching. During his seven-year tenure with Pittsburgh, he won 58 games with an ERA of 3.24. He also led the National League in hits allowed per nine innings pitched in 1987, which stood as the league's third-lowest mark that season. Besides, DeLeon pitched for St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago White Sox from 1988 until he retired in 1995.

José DeLeón's career was defined by his powerful pitching arm and dynamic fastball, which made him one of the most feared pitchers of his time. He finished his career with a record of 86-119, 3.76 ERA, 1688 strikeouts, and 31 career shutouts. His impressive performance earned him recognition as one of the best Puerto Rican pitchers ever. He was a two-time All-Star (1983 and 1985). After retiring as a player, DeLeon became a scout for the New York Yankees, then a coach for different Minor League teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now, he is using his vast experience to mentor young prospects and consult with professional teams about player development. Read even more about Jose DeLeon at Wikipedia
