Jose Rijo was born on May 13, 1965, in São Cristóvão, Dominican Republic. He began his baseball career when he signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent in 1980 at just 15 years old. Four years later, he made his debut with the Yankees, pitching 26 games in 1984. He was then traded to the Oakland Athletics in 1985 but was later traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1988, where he found his success.
With the Reds, Rijo became one of the most dominant pitchers in the league, posting a 14-8 record with a 2.70 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 1988. He was named the World Series MVP in 1990 after leading the Reds to a championship victory. He posted a 2-0 record with a 0.59 ERA, striking out 14 batters in 15 innings pitched. Rijo continued to excel with the Reds, with his career-best season in 1993, posting a 14-9 record with a 2.48 ERA and 227 strikeouts.
Rijo's career took a turn due to injuries in 1995, causing him to miss two full seasons. He attempted a comeback in 2001 with the Reds but was unable to pitch in a single game. Rijo's baseball career consisted of 14 seasons, with a career record of 116 wins and 91 losses, a career ERA of 3.24, and 1,538 strikeouts. Despite his shortened career due to injuries, Rijo remains one of the most successful and influential pitchers in Reds' history.
