Josh Staumont is a professional baseball pitcher born on December 21, 1993, in La Habra, California. Staumont was drafted in the second round of the 2015 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Kansas City Royals, and he made his professional debut on June 29, 2019, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Staumont played college baseball at Azusa Pacific University, where he compiled a 2.51 earned run average (ERA) and 140 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched.
Staumont made headlines during the 2020 MLB season when he pitched in 26 games for the Royals with a 2.45 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. He also recorded three saves during the season. His average fastball velocity of 99.2 mph was the fastest among MLB pitchers with at least 20 innings pitched. Staumont was a key contributor to the Royals bullpen, and his performance earned him a spot as one of the top 10 American League Rookie of the Year candidates.
In the 2021 MLB season, Staumont has continued to be a reliable bullpen option for the Royals. As of July 2021, he has pitched in 30 games with a 2.59 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched.
