Juan Berenguer Autographs
Juan Berenguer is a former professional baseball player who hailed from Panama. As a young boy, he was introduced to the game by his father and quickly showed a natural aptitude for it. After impressing scouts in Panama, Berenguer was signed by the New York Mets in 1976, which marked the beginning of his professional career.
Berenguer played in the major leagues for 15 seasons, during which he was primarily used as a relief pitcher. He spent time with several teams including the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, and San Francisco Giants, but he is most known for his contributions to the Minnesota Twins. Berenguer played for the Twins between 1987 and 1990 and was a key part of the team that won the World Series in 1987. He was known for his dominant performances in high-pressure situations and was referred to by his teammates as “Senor Smoke” for his fastball that frequently clocked in at over 95 mph.
Berenguer retired in 1992 with a career record of 67-62 and an ERA of 3.90. He went on to become a coach in the minor leagues, and in 2019 he was named the first-ever pitching coach for the Panama national baseball team. Berenguer is still revered in both Panama and Minnesota and is remembered as one of the most successful Latin American players in MLB history.
