Bartee began his professional baseball journey when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round of the 1993 Major League Baseball draft. He spent three seasons in the minor leagues before making his debut with the Reds in 1996. However, he only played in 15 games that season before being traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1997. It was with the Tigers that Bartee had his best seasons.
