Kyuji Fujikawa Autographs
Kyuji Fujikawa was born on July 21, 1980, in Shizuoka, Japan. He is a Japanese former professional baseball pitcher who played for the Hanshin Tigers and the Texas Rangers. Fujikawa began his baseball career at the age of six and played for the local baseball team in his hometown. He played for the Fujinomiya Nishi Little League and later played on the junior high school and high school teams.
In 1998, Fujikawa was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers and made his debut in the Pacific League on October 3, 1999. In 2013, after 13 seasons with the Tigers, Fujikawa signed a two-year contract with the Texas Rangers. He made his major league debut on April 7, 2013, becoming the fifth Japanese-born player to pitch for the Rangers. However, his time with the Rangers was plagued by injuries, and Fujikawa was released by the team in July 2014.
Despite his injury struggles in the MLB, Fujikawa's overall career in professional baseball was impressive. He recorded 243 saves and a 1.77 ERA in 591 appearances in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league. He was also a five-time All-Star and won the Central League Rookie of the Year award in 1999. Fujikawa retired from professional baseball in 2018 and currently serves as a baseball analyst on Japanese TV.
