Born on February 15, 1950, in Bessemer, Alabama, Johnson began his baseball career at Auburn University before being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 1st round of the 1970 MLB draft. He spent the majority of his career as a first baseman and designated hitter, playing for the White Sox, Texas Rangers, and Seattle Mariners from 1974 to 1982.
Johnson's best season as a player came in 1977 when he hit .296 with 18 home runs and 85 RBIs for the White Sox. He finished his playing career with a .287 batting average, 81 home runs, and 381 RBIs. After retiring as a player, Johnson went on to become a hitting coach for several teams, including the White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Toronto Blue Jays. He was credited with helping develop the hitting skills of many successful players, including Frank Thomas, Magglio Ordonez, and Carlos Delgado.
